Beeswax For Lip Balm

beeswax for lip balm

You want to ensure you use non-comedogenic ingredients when making your beeswax lip balm.

Non-comedogenic ingredients are unlikely to clog pores and cause breakouts around your lips.

So for this recipe, we've avoided pore-clogging ingredients like coconut oil and cocoa butter.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons of Beeswax Pellets
  • 4 Tablespoons of Argan Oil
  • 4-8 Drops of Vitamin E Oil
  • 4-8 Drops of Essential Oil (optional)

Instructions

The ratio for making a beeswax lip balm is 1 part beeswax to 2 parts argan oil.

The recipe below makes about 6 tubes of lip balm:

Step 1: Combine the Beeswax and Argan Oil Together

For this recipe, you'll use two pots over the stove to melt the beeswax pellets and argan oil.

This is known as the double boiler method. It allows you to heat the beeswax slowly without scorching it.

Start by filling a large pot halfway with water. Heat the water over medium-high heat until it boils.

Once the water boils, gently place a smaller pot inside the large pot of boiling water.

The smaller pot should contain beeswax and argan oil.

Step 2: Melt the Beeswax and Argan Oil, Stirring Occasionally

The melting process can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

Once the beeswax has melted, remove it from the stove and add 4-8 drops of vitamin E oil.

Vitamin E oil is rich in antioxidants and acts as a moisturizer for dry lips.

Additionally, you can add a few drops of essential oils if you want added fragrance or flavor.

For example, you can add a few drops of peppermint oil to the mixture to create a dupe for Burt's Bees peppermint beeswax lip balm.

But keep in mind:

Some essential oils can irritate the skin, so be aware of any allergies you may have.

Step 3: Pour the Mixture into Lip Balm Containers

After pouring the lip balm into your containers, allow them to cool to room temperature so they can solidify.

The cooling process is best if left overnight.

From there, you can add custom labels to your containers if you wish.

Is Beeswax Good for Lip Balm?

beeswax for lip balm

Beeswax is good for lip balm because it creates a barrier on the lips that helps to lock in moisture.

Thanks to its antibacterial properties, beeswax has a long history of being used for certain skin conditions, such as treating burns and wounds.

Nowadays, beeswax is used in skincare products to soothe symptoms from skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, diaper rash, and wounds.

One study even found that natural products like beeswax were far superior in soothing sensitive skin than skin care products with synthetic ingredients.(1)

Another scientific review noted the following benefits of beeswax:(2)

  • It softens and moisturizes the skin
  • It reduces water loss that could lead to dryness
  • It has antiseptic properties, which can help protect the skin from pathogenic microorganisms
  • It adds a protective barrier to the skin
  • It provides vitamin A, which helps skin recover faster after damage

What’s more, beeswax is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores or cause breakouts around the lips.

Which Beeswax is Best for Lip Balm?

beeswax for lip balm

We recommend using beeswax pellets instead of beeswax blocks. Pellets are easier to melt quickly and evenly. They’re also easier to measure, so you can get precisely the amount you need.

However, you can also use a block of beeswax if you don’t mind the process taking a little longer.

To use a block of beeswax, start by grating it with a cheese grater or use a sharp knife to chop it into smaller pieces. The smaller the pieces, the easier they will be to melt.

Additionally, you can buy pre-made beeswax lip balm in various flavors, including strawberry, vanilla bean, and coconut pear.

Is Vaseline better than beeswax?

Vaseline is a petroleum-based product that can help seal in moisture. However, it does not have the same antibacterial properties as beeswax. With that said, Vaseline can still be used to create a protective barrier for the skin. This is especially helpful when you’re dealing with cuts or wounds.

Some people may find that Vaseline can be slightly greasy for the lips, while others find it to be hydrating. Like beeswax, Vaseline is non-comedogenic, so it doesn’t clog pores.

Both beeswax and Vaseline are good products, and you can use them both. There is no need to choose one over the other unless you have a preference.

Start by melting the beeswax and oil using a double boiler. You’ll use one part beeswax to two parts oil. For instance, you can use one ounce of beeswax to two ounces of argan oil.

Once the beeswax has melted, remove it from the heat and add a few drops of vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil will help preserve the beeswax lip balm, so it has a longer shelf life.
